The Cultural Aspects In Dubai Nightlife
Dubai Nightlife - The Cultural Aspects In Dubai Nightlife by Dubai City Guide Summer 2008
Dubai is multicultural, but its society is still deeply rooted in history, tradition and religious beliefs. While nightlife is in abundance in Dubai, there are several restrictions, regulations and rules to be followed while enjoying a night out at the clubs and bars. Most of these are related to public behaviour and alcohol consumption. So, when you get ready to kick back, unwind and leave the day behind in Dubai, take the following in to consideration.
Alcohol Consumption
Alcohol is strictly prohibited in Dubai, except within the walls of licenced bars and clubs located in hotels. Public consumption is punishable by prison terms and fines, while driving under the influence is a definite offence.
Indecent Behaviour
What’s considered as indecent behaviour in the Western and European countries can be what’s considered as downright dirty in Dubai. Social behaviour in Dubai is heavily influenced by the Islamic beliefs and generally, public kissing and any activity indicating extreme closeness between the opposite sexes are discouraged and may be punishable offences. Nightlife regulations are somewhat relaxed in this manner, because the system is designed in a such a way as not to encourage singles to mingle. Of course, there are caveats to all this, but in general, nightlife in Dubai is suitable for those who can follow relatively strict guidelines.
Dress Codes
Each nightspot has a different dress code, but as a practice, anything smart and good-looking is allowed. If you are female, as long as you refrain from wearing ultra-skimpy clothing, which would attract unnecessary attention, you’ll be permitted in to the club. Men are expected to be dressed smartly, but not in formal attire. Sneakers, sporting wear, sandals and shorts are not acceptable.
Besides the restriction and regulations, Dubai’s nightlife has a different cultural aspect too. This is in the form of traditional Arabic entertainment, such as belly dancing, dhow cruises and musical concerts. Some specialised Arabic nightspots are available in Dubai, based around desert, Middle Eastern historic and cultural themes.
